What-You-May-Call-Him


Who is he? As far as I know: a most brilliant novelist from Brazil whose work spans forty years, from 1930 to 1970. His only novel translated into English, The Devil to Pay in the Backlands, has been published only once in the U.S.,  in 1963.

In 2002, guardian.co.uk posted this article, which lists the Top 100 Writers of the Twentieth Century as decided by one hundred noted writers from over fifty countries: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2002/may/08/books.booksnews. Guimarães Rosa is included.

João Guimarães Rosa, João Guimarães Rosa, few people today know the name João Guimarães Rosa, because few people today speak or write the name João Guimarães Rosa. I’d like to change that.
